SnowmanSnowmen are People Too: Norman’s Whimsical Transient Winter Population

Snowmen are People Too: Norman’s Whimsical Transient Winter Population, a photography exhibit by Miranda Arana, will run through February 29, 2012.

Statement by Miranda Arana:

On Christmas Eve in 2009, Norman was hit by a blizzard that left almost fourteen inches of snow on the ground. This storm remains documented online in the form of numerous amateur home videos. My own documentation process is the focus of this exhibit; I drove around Norman on Christmas day and the day after, with my boots and my camera, to photograph the snow creatures that emerged in people’s front yards.

Christmas day was bright and sunny. Droves of Norman families went outside to play in the snow. Snow men, snow women, snow cats and dogs, snow Sooners, and even snow monsters appeared in the front yards of almost every street in town. With this exhibit, I am pleased to share the burst of creativity, humor, and artistry demonstrated by the people of Norman on a day when families were gathered and snowbound, and collectively decided to get outside to play.

I hope you get a kick out of the unique personalities of these brief Norman residents. With the exception of a few from more recent winters, all of the snow creatures in this exhibit were born on or near Christmas Day, 2009, and remained with us for only a few days before returning to their source. Their spirit lives on in these photos.
